19TH CENTURY GILDED MIRROR
Further images
Rectangular wall mirror with ornate gilded frame. Warmer tones coming through the gold leaf on the inner slip. Decorative castings of scrolls, foliate and floral decoration, the gold leaf applied here through the method of water gilding. The gold leaf is applied to the clay, the smooth surface of which allows the gold leaf to be polished to a more brilliant finish using a burnishing tool and hence the darker markings visible in places from the original application. The recessed decoration is gilded through technique of oil gilding, the process of which does not include the gold to be burnished and therefore a slightly different and less brilliant finish. The outer edges are undecorated.
On the reverse of the frame is a manufacturers label and wax seal of the frame's providence. With beautiful original mirror plate, bevelled edge. Sweden, circa 1850 - 1890.
